There's Something Fishy Going on Here!

A Bishop Savaryn School Project Using the Theme "Fish"

About our project:

Using the theme “Fish” students in grades k, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 will investigate the life cycle of fish, the environment necessary for healthy fish, and fish as a symbol of our Catholic faith.   They will compare fish in the natural environment and in aquariums to determine what we as a school need to do to keep fish in our aquariums and fish in the river and Lake Beaumaris healthy.  (There have been goldfish sighted living and surviving in Lake Beaumaris.)  Our major learning goal is that through close contact with and through the care of fish in our school and lake community, students will become advocates for taking care of our river and lake environments. Through our school web site students will share their learning and advocate for clean bodies of water. They will begin their journey as young environmentalists by helping to keep Lake Beaumaris clean.

Students in grades Kindergarten, one, two, three, five, and six will investigate fish through various activities.

They will:

Research information on fish in various parts of the world, interpret and apply the information to the care of tropical fish in their classroom aquariums .

Investigate ways that our school can  make a difference in helping to keep our rivers and Lake Beaumaris  clean.

Write letters, email organizations, and use the internet to gather information.

Write reports, stories and poems about fish

Be involved in various art activities from sketching to print making

Research and write about the meaning of fish as a symbol of our Catholic religion.

Set up aquariums and take responsibility for the care of the fish.

Take part in the city's "Yellow Fish Road" program (learn about the effects of dumping chemicals in our sewer system, distribute information brochures in our community, and paint yellow fish next to the manhole covers and the storm drains) to remind people not to dump chemicals into the storm sewers.

Become involved in a clean-up project around Lake Beaumaris, to make this water body a cleaner place for the birds, insects, and animals that live in and around the lake.

Communicate research with other schoolmates both within our school as well as with students in other schools in the city through email.

Design a main page and linked pages for our school web site where they will post pictures of the school's aquariums, student drawings, poems and school activities related to our study of fish.

Post pictures and stories  of community involvement in the project  on the web site.

Present to the whole school during an assembly, ways to keep our community environment clean and safe for fish, birds, insects, and other animals.

Students involved with the project  will share their discoveries with students in all grades from kindergarten to grade six. This will be done through presentations and through the web site.
